La città sorge sull'omonimo golfo del mar Tirreno, tra la costiera Amalfitana (a ovest) e la piana del Sele ed il Cilento (a sud), nel punto in cui la valle dell'Irno si apre verso il mare. Dal punto di vista orografico il territorio comunale è molto variegato, si va dal livello del mare fino ad arrivare ai 953 metri del monte Stella. L'abitato si sviluppa lungo la costa e si estende verso l'interno fino alle colline retrostanti. La città è attraversata dal fiume Irno, che fino alla metà del secolo scorso ne segnava il confine orientale e da cui, probabilmente, deriva il suo nome.[6] Altro corso d'acqua che scorre nel territorio comunale è il fiume Picentino, confine orientale di Salerno con Pontecagnano. |
